Here is some of the equipment we use during an investigation

NOTE:  (This is not a complete list.  We have not included all the extra wiring, batteries, extension cords, flashlights, 4X4 table, equipment cases, tri-pods, and portable power units.)

The camcorder of choice is the Sony camcorder line.  This camcorder features a nightshot feature which records in total darkness.  The nightshot setting uses infrared light to record beyond what the human eye can see.  We have been getting great results using it.  We use these camcorders instead of nightvision scopes.  Night vision scopes tend to more expensive and they are easily damaged by light and pose a risk to the users eye with a lot of camera flashes going off.  The Sony line is the only one with the nightshot feature and they start at about $200.00.  We use mini dv models only.

There are many different types of EMF meters, but the two largest categories are single axis and tri-axis. Single axis meters are cheaper than a tri-axis meters, but take longer to complete a survey because the meter only measures one dimension of the field. Single axis instruments have to be tilted and turned on all three axes to obtain a full measurement. A tri-axis meter measures all three axes simultaneously, but these models tend to be more expensive.Electromagnetic fields can be generated by with AC or DC currents. An EMF meter can measure AC electromagnetic fields, which are usually emitted from man-made sources such as electrical wiring, while Gauss meters or magnetometers measure DC fields, which occur naturally in Earth's geomagnetic field and are emitted from other sources where direct current is present.

Digital voice recorders are used by paranormal investigators to help capture disembodied voices. These are sometimes used during electronic voice phenomena (EVP) sessions or possibly during the entire duration of an investigation. We have 7 of them and utilize 2 techniques.  We do "real time EVP sessions" and "Short burst EVP Sessions" or a combination of both.  Short burst is voice activated recording only and the recorder does not run continuously.  This eliminates background noises and shortens evidence review and gives more accurate  results.(We use only olympus recorders).

We use several different types of IR lights.  We use a sony ir light, The Sima IR 10 and Sima IR 20.  We also untilize a plug in IR 50 light (great range for spotlight effect).  These are used for various uses.  The Sony and Plug in are excellent for uses in hallways and have a very good "spotlight" effect.  The Sima IR 10 is ok for small room uses but the Sima IR 20 should be used when filming for video or live stream.  The only knock on the Sima IR 20 is the battery life (45 min) that is why we have 4 of them.

These handheld devices measure the temperature of the object they are pointed at. They work exactly like your vision, except that they are sensitive to far infrared instead of the visible spectrum. They measure surface temperatures, just like your vision measures surface colors. If you can see something, an IR thermometer can measure its temperature. However, ghost hunters use these devices to detect what they believe are cold spots in rooms. IR thermometers are not capable of detecting something without a visible surface.

Many ghost hunters have said they get good results from lower end cameras. When they say lower end they mean few bells and whistles. But, it is important that you don't skimp on megapixels.  You will want a digital camera with a minimum of 4 megapixels. You never know when you will capture a possible ghost on film and need to enlarge the image. The more megapixels your camera has then the clearer the picture will be as you enlarge the picture. Too few megapixels can ruin possible evidence of the paranormal if you need to blow up the image.  Don't forget to bring at least one extra battery. It is believed that when spirits manifest themselves they draw energy from any available source. It is common for camera batteries to die when this happens. If you have an extra battery or two with you then you can continue taking pictures.

Laptops are now a crucial piece of equipment for Paranormal Nights on our ghost hunt events. Laptops allow us to view/manipulate on a larger scale any images and footage caught by ourselves or our guests. We can also use laptops to connect to the projector(s) to show post and pre vigil footage on the fly and even host purpose made presentations by using the laptop with projector and speakers. We do recommend you get one with a powerful CPU and plenty of ram coupled with a good graphics card. This level of laptop is going to enable you to view footage smoothly and without slowdown and for ourselves we have firewire and high speed usb 2.0 connections available to allow the connection of various different types of recording devices.

We utilize an affordable dvr system with good features.  This system user friendly and very easy to upgrade.    We decided to begin using a dvr system for more coverage area during our investigations.  The advantage of having a dvr security system is it gives the investigators more time to investigate without having to worry about always carrying a sony handy cam around.  It also provides more time without worrying about changing tapes. We also feel the extended coverage gives us a better opportunity to catch possible evidence.  After much discussion into the matter we have decided to start using a system that best suits our needs.
